Eaton AFDD — Arc Fault Detection Device

Shah N Shah supplies the Eaton Moeller series xPole AFDD+, a DIN-rail device that detects dangerous arc faults — a leading cause of electrical fires — that standard MCBs and RCDs are not designed to catch. Eaton xPole AFDD+ Specifications

The xPole AFDD+ range covers current ratings from 10A to 40A, in 2-pole, 230V configurations, with B and C tripping characteristics to match different load types. Earth-leakage sensitivity is available at 30mA (standard personal protection, Type A) or 10mA (higher sensitivity), with rated short-circuit breaking capacity of 6kA or 10kA depending on the specific model. Each unit combines three protection functions in one device: arc fault detection, residual current (earth-leakage) protection, and short-circuit/overload protection — effectively an AFDD, RCD, and MCB in a single 3-module-wide housing.

How Eaton AFDD Protects Your Installation

An arc fault occurs when electrical current jumps across a gap in damaged, loose, or aging wiring, generating intense localised heat that can ignite surrounding material without ever tripping a conventional breaker. The xPole AFDD+ uses pulse-current sensing (type A) to continuously monitor the circuit for the specific electrical signature of an arc fault and trips the circuit before a fire can start — with an LED fault indicator showing whether the trip was caused by an arc fault, overload, or earth leakage.

AFDD+ devices are increasingly specified for bedrooms and living areas in residential wiring, home offices, and any final circuit where cable damage risk or fire consequence is high. Several national wiring codes now recommend or require AFDD protection on specific circuit types — check your local wiring regulation for applicability.
